The character’s names are Bailey and Mae.

AIDE : Il est facile de reconnaitre les personnages, même si les noms sont un peu inhabituels, grâce aux majuscules.

2. What are the characters doing ? Choose the right answer :

a. They are speakers at a conference.

b. They are in the audience at a conference.

c. They have arrived late to a conference.

The answer is  a) They are speakers at a conference.

3. Select two adjectives in the following list which show Bailey’s reaction to the speech. Support your choices with two quotes.

The adjectives are complimentary and supportive.

L 11  …”has been a wonderfully enlightening and inspiring talk”

4. True or false? Support your answer with a quote.

 a. The audience disagrees with the speakers.

The answer is b) Mae believes that not sharing information is like stealing.

a. What tool is used to emphasize Mae’s ideas?

 b. What is Mae’s reaction to the use of that tool?

a) the tool is a screen behind the speakers with probably PowerPoint and key words and sentences showing at the right time.

l.31” The words now appeared on the screen behind him in great white letters”

Mae feels emotional and cannot really believe this came from her. She feels teary and has difficulties talking;

l.34/35 “She blinked back tears, seeing it all there. Had she really thought of that herself?”

6. Pick out two quotes that show that Bailey is influencing the audience.

l.30 “Bailey turned to the audience. “Isn’t that an interesting way of putting it, guys?”

l.42 ” Let’s thank Mae for her candor, her brilliance and her consummate humanity, can we please?”

7. Focus on lines 33 to 46. What evolution can we notice in Mae’s feelings?

It seems that at the beginning of the conference, Mae is quite sure of herself and what she’s saying, she shows confidence and enthusiasm, but once it’s getting towards the end, she feels very emotional, her face is red, she doesn’t know if she should sit down or not, doesn’t know quite how to behave.

8. “Had she really thought of all that herself?” (l. 35). What does that reveal about Mae and Bailey’s relationship?

The fact that she’s quite surprised that she was able to think this up by herself as well as Bailey’s attitude during the conference may infer that she’s been manipulated by Bailey. It is possible that he planted these thoughts into her head.

This document is about personal information we can put on the Net and how this information can be put together by people who can steal someone’s identity for illegal use. An expert shows how on a TV program. The text is relatively easy to understand, without any major difficulties.

10. Copy out the following paragraph and fill in the blanks with words from the text.

Bill Dean is specialized in computer security. His job is to explain to companies their weaknesses and help them make their networks secure.

11. What personal information is given about Karen Schemmel ? Give three elements.

Her maiden name. Her date of birth. Where she went to high school and college.

12. True or false. Support your answer with a quote from the text.

 c. Dean claims that all information put on social media remains forever. R.

c) True. “He says you should understand that what is posted to social media should be considered permanent.”

13. According to Dean, what information should not appear on your social media account to ensure privacy? Give two elements.

Date of birth. Any information on social media that you use for “challenge questions” to authenticate yourself to banks or reset passwords.

14. Focus on Mae (document A) and Dean (document B). Do they have the same opinion on privacy? Explain briefly.

No, they don’t have the same opinion at all ? In fact they are quite the opposite. Mae believes that everything should be shared, we should talk about everything we know and do; she sees this as her duty, a selfless attitude and to not do this would be like stealing from people who need this information.

Dean actually claims that you should say as little as possible on social medias, because you’re then opening the door to all sort of unscrupulous people who will take advantage of you. What’s more whatever you write is there forever, so if you express an opinion which you may not share further in in life, it may come back and haunt you.

Ce qui suit est juste un exemple de ce que vous auriez pu écrire. Il n’y a pas d’expression juste ou fausse.

Sujet 1

Mae (document A) has accepted to take part in the “going transparent” project. What do you think she may expect from this experiment? (150 words, +/- 10%)

It is possible that Mae thinks that by doing this she’s reaching out to her fellow humans and showing her love and compassion. Sharing has always been a good thing to do. From childhood, our parents told us to share and not be selfish. Even if this is a bit extreme and smacks of brain washing, she may think that she could find some relief or peace of mind from this. That she’s doing her duty and that people will be thankful and appreciate her frankness. She may also see herself as a ground breaker, a new kind of person, somebody who will lead others towards a path of openness. She may also have some unconscious expectations on what to reveal and what not to reveal and not be able in the end to tell all. It is after all quite difficult to share your most intimate secrets with a crowd. (151 mots)

Sujet 2

“Secrets are lies” (document A, line 35). Do you agree with this statement? Explain. (150 words, +/- 10%)

Lies are when you deliberately say something which is not true with the intention of deceiving the person you’re speaking to. A secret is something you do not wish to reveal to others for various reasons. Either because it could harm yourself or other people, or because it is a cherished memory you want to keep to yourself or something you may be ashamed of. The two are completely different things. And although some secrets should not be secrets, because they tend to fester and become harmful if people don’t speak frankly to each other, like for example family secrets, some are perfectly reasonable and even necessary. The implication in this statement is that by not saying something you deliberately want to harm your fellow human beings but by saying something which shouldn’t be said, you could actually do more harm than good. Therefore, I disagree with this statement. (149 mots)
